There are times in which we may feel “off”, or “disconnected” from ourselves, or disassociating – which is when it feels like we are on the outside looking in at ourselves. During experiences like these, we feel weird, different, and can easily start to overanalyze ourselves.
Rather than assuming there is something wrong with you, once we gain clarity regarding the complexity of our internal world, we can appreciate when we are out of alignment and thus able to restore alignment.
The Restoring-Self-Cohesion (RSC) model helps us understand our magnificent design. You are not a static one-dimensional being. You have many sides to you, each unique, contributing to the whole of who you are. That is why we hate being misjudged or misunderstood based on one characteristic because it makes us feel misrepresented.
You are a brilliantly designed three-part being with fascinating prisms and dimensions to your sense of self. You are a spirit-being.
Your body has 11 systems simultaneously interacting with one another, with 78 organs, and over 100 billion neurons all communicating with one another to help your one body function. You are truly a brilliant creative being! Now imagine, how complex your soul and spirit are – if that is what we can see regarding the various parts of us collaborating to create the whole body.
The misnomer of this generation is to assume that we are fated to our genetics, thinking that our body’s reactions are happening to us. When we assume the body is the leader impacting us, we feel broken, and easily develop learned helplessness. But think of the reality that, once the soul/spirit leave the body, the body does not act by itself. A body without the metaphysical soul/spirit is a corpse. So we are not victims to our neurochemistry, brain anatomy, or genetics. Rather, the thoughts of our soul and spirit are setting off chemical reactions that cause the neurochemistry to react. If you have felt discouraged or hopeless regarding your mental health issues, RSC gives hope as you learn the value of neuroplasticity – which is the research-based principle that by changing your thoughts, you can change your brain function and pathways. *So I’ll repeat it again, you are not fated to your neurochemistry, genetics, or mental health issues. *Now, in saying that, it does not mean that mental health issues are easy to resolve or neurochemistry changes automatically. Rather, it is giving hope that, with the right approach, you can learn how to restore internal alignment among the parts of you so you can function in a cohesive-self that is more likely to foster emotional health, mental health, physical health, spiritual health, and relationship health.
Now, let’s get back to your internal world. You have a body, but instead of conceptualizing yourself through your body, in reality, you are first and foremost a spirit being. In right alignment you are intended to lead from your spirit which is your true-self. Your spirit is the part of you that causes you to feel brave, confident, secure, and aware of your purpose. You feel like yourself when you are leading from your spirit.
Then you have a soul that is like an administrative assistant that helps you take in information from the outside world and from your inside world, interprets and then routes that information – which signals neurochemical reactions in your central nervous system to execute that which you are thinking, feeling, and wanting to do.
The problem is, when we are hurt, feel shame, or embarrassed, when we feel insecure or doubt the trustworthiness of others, our internal world gets out of alignment. Your spirit is wild, carefree, and confident to be yourself, but at any point when we feel taken aback and start to shrink inside ourselves and placing a mask or hiding behind a “false self,” we are in a state of misalignment.
When the soul or body are leading you will feel, empty, alone even around loved ones, you’ll feel a lack of pleasure, chronically tired, irritable, depressed and anxious because your soul is not self-generating. Your soul is trying to protect you – which places your internal world in a defensive posture – keeping the fear response active – which leads to burnout, heightened triggers, and moodiness.
In learning how to restore cohesion to your sense of self, you’ll learn how to resolve the internal conflicts that produced the misalignment. Once the misalignments are resolves, you’ll find that you can practice mindfulness exercise throughout the day that help you peel back the layers from your heart to allow the sunlight of unconditional love to draw your spirit forward. When your spirit is leading you will once again feel like yourself and your love tank and emotional capacity will stay full.
